Areas of Responsibility and Focus

The Department of Information Systems has five areas of responsibility:

The Helpdesk responds to customer service requests in a timely manner; provides support for equipment and software acquisition through research, recommendations, and order tracking; installs new computer hardware and software; researches information related to problems with hardware and software; and provides asset management for computer hardware and software purchases.

The second area of responsibility is the administration of the Network which includes maintaining security and data integrity; the maintenance of servers for storage of data; ensuring the backup of data in a timely manner; and providing access to the network by users. In addition, this area of responsibility supports the City's e-mail system and access to the Intranet and Internet by City employees.

The third area is focused on Telecommunications to provide support and assistance to the users of our telephone equipment as well as maintenance and wiring services for communication purposes. In addition, support is provided in assisting with the acquisition of new systems. This area is also responsible for the coordination of the City's communication activities between the City and City Utilities, AT&T, MCI/Verizon, and other service providers.

The Database Administration/Development group is focused on the administration and maintenance of existing systems, i.e., financial reporting, payroll, permit system, service requests, fleet maintenance, and numerous other applications for the various departments of the City. The group is involved with the development and support of new applications as identified by management, users, and also the development team. They are involved with the development of applications for the City's Internet and Intranet site as well as e-commerce functionality. The group also supports the document imaging efforts of City departments.

The Geographical Information Systems (GIS) area creates, supports, and maintains GIS data layers; provides access to GIS data to all users; provides training in the use of GIS software and data; and assists with the coordination of sharing GIS data between the City and other governmental agencies.
